Steve McClaren has refused to rule out a move for QPR striker Charlie Austin. The Magpies were interested in taking the striker to St James' Park in the summer but the 26-year-old former brick layer ended up remaining at Loftus Road.

Speaking after Newcastle's 1-0 loss to Arsenal, McClaren was asked by TalkSport if he was interested in Austin. "I can’t mention names," he said.

"We are talking very privately and we are not discussing anything about January, any targets. We know what we need and we know what we are doing behind the scenes. I just say we’ll keep that private until such time that something happens.

"Believe you me, we are working tirelessly behind the scenes to correct things and move on and get results."
